For as long as my memory goes

There is one thing I sure remember

One thing at which I never failed

While at others I surrendered

For even as a little kid

The words use to flow endlessly

I spoke, and spoke, and spoke, and spoke

I just spoke continuously

Just a mic and any topic

Were more than enough to trigger

The debater hidden in the introvert’s skin

Who spoke with passion and vigor

And ever since that dreadful day

When my secret was discovered

I found myself facing strange faces

Who waited for every word I murmured

Debates, speeches, extemporary

I’ve done all in the list

But never out of 900 speeches

Did I ever give a speech of my wish

Very early had my timid heart

Learned from a teachers wrath

“Your work is just to speak and win

On whichever topic has been brought

Don’t ever, oh! You little fool

Trouble your innocent mind to judge

Life is all about the grey shades

There is no black or white, as such

That day in second grade, I gave-

My first speech without my heart

But even my empty-witty words had

Brought me a medal and a scholarship-card

And that dreadful day in second grade

I lost something very important

The ‘will’ to speak for the ‘right cause’

The ‘will’ which now was forgotten

And so my future was immediately fixed

And so today I wait in the black coat

For another rich criminal to come

And get him justice in the court

Though this job is life sucking

It pays enough to keep life entertained

And, who cares for the soulless heart

When your high standards are maintained

And if ever did my rebellion heart

Tricked me by drowning in guilt

I in turn tricked him back

By drowning him in a strong drink

But then again on a dreadful day

I was to be punished for my sins

I stood before my second grade teacher

I was fighting the case against him

My client was a typical rich brat

Who speeded his car in a drunken state

And turned my teacher’s only son

Into young Mr. Krishna Murti- The Late

The case was simple- crystal clear

My spoiled client was to be jailed

But my wit and mastery of words

Had granted me a new Porsche

And him indefinite bail

So when my teacher looked up at me

And with helpless eyes he said

“You very well know, your client is wrong.

My innocent son didn’t deserve to be dead.”

And I, with a witty smile, responded

“Oh! No sir, I’m no more the little fool

Who troubled his innocent mind to judge

You see, life is shades of grey

There is no black or white, as such.”

And with those words his eyes flooded

Laying his hand on my head he said,

“Forgive me. Oh! Innocent heart;

For I have corrupted you, instead.”

Again confused, just like in second grade

“Why do you ask forgiveness from me?”

“For I, a coward, jealous teacher

Has created another monster like me”

And with those fatal words

He left me there alone to bleed

But with all the pain, he had

Cleverly sown a brand new seed

Next day at court, sharp at 10am

The judge was ready to give the verdict

Where the booze has successfully numbed

My heart overridden with guilt

All set with my final blow,

Which assured freedom for my client

I opened my mouth with all my force

But shut! Went blank my mind

The debater who was never out of words

Stood stripped-naked in front of all

Not a word dared to come out of his mouth

Nobody was there to rescue him from the fall

And so I guess that

You can imagine very well

How both- the case and the car

Went down- right into hell

Even today, I do what I used to

The same old, debates, speech and extemporary

The consumer rights cabin- my new office

They say ‘an honest lawyer’ is so very rare

That dreadful day in the court

I laughed at my own foolishness

For all my life, I spoke at win

But tasted real victory by simply being speechless
