Being a person of a pre-millennial generation where technology couldn’t impact our imagination, reading developed into a habit at quite an early age. We in the family read for fun without any research analysis thrown on us.

During school and college days the impact of reading was entirely different from what I experience today. Recently after spending two-three days on an interesting book on ideologies of our Late President Mr. Kalam I thought of passing his motivational messages to all, starting from the family. So when kids struggled in their study-related tasks, I threw one of his quotes “ Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success”.

The other day when my younger one was disappointed after her loss in a match I told her “ you must have single-minded devotion to your goal.” And my mission went on for few more days until when I passed again a noble message to one of my children’ friend who was scared of the upcoming test “have the courage to travel the unexplored path, the courage to discover impossible and to conquer the problems” and left the room towards the kitchen to prepare juice for kids.

I overheard him saying “ what’s wrong with your mamma?” and my kid replied, “ she has imagined us a team of the Space Launch vehicle and missile programme and herself the leader of the team, don’t worry it will not last long”. Hearing this immediately my Kalam spirit was punctured and I returned to my normal self.

The next day I thought of reading just for fun. So I picked one of my school days favorite “Feluda” which was a sheer thriller and had given me quite an adrenal rush in the past. But in spite of finishing the first few chapters, nothing excited me. I realized after a while that the innocence with which we read these books is lost somewhere, now a lot of spying element has already been infused in our circulatory system till this age. I am sure that most ladies will comply with this fact of mine that this trait starts when we are girlfriends, develops more when we are wives, and goes to graduation level when we are mothers of millennial kids. And of course, we become full-fledged detectives ready to be hired by any agency when we are a mother of a teenager. Hence bidding goodbye to my innocent fun reading days I slipped back the book in its place.

At night on the dinner table, while I was thinking of trying my hands on baking and grilling through good recipe books to rejuvenate myself, both father and son started their discussion on upcoming gadgets, their latest features, and so on so forth. Knowing my minimal interest or knowledge of this domain they both secretly started making fun of it. I felt like pushed from a height and falling on the ground. Immediately I remembered how my son was confused with the hydrocarbons and refractive index assignments. Hence I threw two-three questions on esterification and changing wavelength in refraction. There was utter silence and I got up from the table saying “ no one will ask you on boards why androids should be preferred over iPhones”. That time I realized it's always favourable to read subject books too, they act like parachutes when you are left in mid-air.

Anyway from the next day my cooking spree started with the recipe books and the family enjoyed the treats for few days but this ended before just a week when a statement came  “ honey as you have surpassed all good chefs skills we can get rid of our silly cook”. Another realization came across, normal food is best for family and self-health and hence my cooking book and apron were back at their original places.

Finally, we all took respite by picking fun books and together read Astrix, Tinkle, Suppandi, etc. and had good laughter, however, a fun book day can never get over without reading our family favourite “Calvin and Hobbes” overlooking the fact that I could be targeted a  “Zog work queen” or the performance graph can dip further….HAPPY READING…
