The world often judges honest people as not being smart enough. Some assume they are honest simply because they are incapable of manipulation or unwilling to face its consequences. Yet those who resist the temptation to compromise their integrity know the tremendous moral strength that honesty demands.

Recently, a friend of mine shared her experience. She was employed in government service, but after her marriage her career was disrupted. While the church proclaims, “What God has joined together, let no one separate,” government service rules are not always so accommodating. As a result, she was compelled to take an extended leave without pay.

After fulfilling her responsibilities at home—giving birth to two children and nurturing them—Kamala returned to work. However, the four-year gap in her service created enormous difficulties in getting her employment regularized. She had to settle for a minimum salary without the UGC pay scale or annual increments.

Initially, she accepted the situation without complaint. But as the years passed, she became increasingly concerned. Unless her service was regularized, she would not be eligible for the benefits she had earned. She made countless trips to the office, but nothing changed. The official responsible for processing her file expected an “incentive” before taking action. Such a demand was completely against Kamala’s principles. She believed that the work he was expected to do was simply part of the job for which he was employed. Both remained steadfast in their convictions, and as a result, her case remained unresolved for thirteen long years.

Then, one of her colleagues, who had always sympathized with her situation, became the principal. Kamala thanked God for His infinite and mysterious ways. The new principal reviewed the backlog of files, questioned the clerk about the delay, and instructed that Kamala’s file be updated and forwarded to the appropriate office.

To cut a long story short, my friend finally received orders approving her service and releasing her arrears. Her joy knew no bounds. More than the financial benefit, she rejoiced that she had not been forced to compromise her principles. She was also relieved to discover that her revised salary exceeded that of some of her former students who had joined the faculty years after her.

Receiving thirteen years’ worth of arrears was an unexpected windfall. Ironically, some of her colleagues envied her, joking that she had been forced into a compulsory savings plan all those years. Kamala wisely invested the money by purchasing a piece of land. Many years later, that investment appreciated tremendously and brought her a substantial financial return.

Kamala became a living testimony to the rewards of truthfulness and integrity. At first, honesty may appear dull and unrewarding. It may lead to disappointment, discouragement, and long periods of waiting. Yet when you choose not to abandon your principles, the rewards eventually come—both tangible and intangible. Above all, honesty brings a deep sense of peace, happiness, and satisfaction that no amount of money or investment can ever buy.
