Prologue: The Road to Connection

Ruchin

Not all journeys begin with a roadmap or a destination. Instead, they start as an idea, a whisper of possibility that grows louder daily, nagging at you until you can no longer ignore it. For us, it all started in the summer of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill. Life had become routine, predictable, and, frankly, a little dull. That was when Neil—my son, partner in crime, and copilot on this adventure—expressed his interest in learning how to drive a manual car. The only problem was that we did not own a manual car.

Over the next few weeks, his desire gave rise to an absurd yet simple idea—to buy a manual car for him to learn how to drive and then sell it off.

As our search progressed, so did our vision. What started as a simple idea quickly snowballed into something far more ambitious: let’s buy and modify a car under $5,000, take the trip of a lifetime, and then see what happens next. We would call our project the Kansal Clunker.

The journey that would define a year of our lives began with a 1998 Acura Integra with 159,068 miles on it—a clunker most people wouldn’t have looked twice at. Yet, where others saw a rundown wreck, we saw a challenge, a dream, and a promise of adventure. We affectionately nicknamed the car Teggy and decided to drive it to Mount Evans, Colorado, the highest paved road in the United States.

The journey to prepare Teggy for the trip was a feat in itself. Along the way, we learned more than we ever expected—about cars, life, and each other. Each chapter of this book captures moments of triumph, frustration, discovery, and reflection—a mosaic of experiences that mirrors the unpredictable road of life.

As you read these pages, you will travel with us from our garage to sweeping landscapes, through unexpected challenges, and to the joy of accomplishment. You will meet the people who became part of our story, from family and friends to strangers who left a lasting impact. More importantly, you will witness a father and son forging their bond through a shared vision.

So, buckle up. The road ahead is scenic, winding, and full of surprises. If there is one thing we have learned, it is that the best journeys are the ones that take you places you never expected.

At the end of it all, not only did we rebuild Teggy, but we also rebuilt ourselves.
