An Unsettling Journey into Choice, Fate, and the Human Psyche
Announcing The Mystery of the Lunatic and Other Stories
What happens when a single moment—raw, violent, and impossible to forget—reaches into the deepest corners of the human mind and refuses to let go?
The Mystery of the Lunatic and Other Stories by Sudip Bhattacharya is a haunting new collection that ventures boldly into the psychological landscapes we often avoid. The titular story is built around the chilling premise of witnessing a brutal crime, and the lifelong imprint it leaves behind. This book draws readers into a world where perception fractures, memory lingers, and the line between sanity and survival begins to blur.
Comprising eight powerful short stories, the collection explores the human psyche with unflinching honesty. Each narrative turns on a moral dilemma—quiet yet profound choices that shape the course of a life. From the seemingly simple act of naming a child to the weight of inherited beliefs, from yielding to societal expectations to resisting them, every story captures a moment of decision that feels deeply personal and universally relatable.

What sets this collection apart is not just its thematic depth, but its immersive, unsettling tone. Bhattacharya crafts stories that do more than unfold; they linger. They stay with you, unsettling your certainties and compelling you to revisit your own beliefs long after you’ve turned the final page.
Though each story stands alone, they are bound together by recurring themes of choice, fate, and human vulnerability. The result is a cohesive reading experience that feels both intimate and expansive—an exploration of what it means to be human when pushed to the edge.
In a striking narrative choice, every story concludes with a direct question to the reader: what would you choose? This simple yet powerful device transforms the book from a passive reading experience into an interactive one, inviting readers to confront their own moral compass.
The Mystery of the Lunatic and Other Stories is not just a collection—it is an invitation. To reflect. To question. And perhaps, to discover unsettling truths about ourselves.
