Untold Chapters from the History of India

Discover the Stories History Books Often Leave Behind

How much do we really know about India’s past? Beyond the familiar kings, queens, battles, and dates lies a fascinating world of forgotten heroes, extraordinary discoveries, scientific marvels, geographical mysteries, and cultural traditions that continue to shape our lives. Some stories have slipped through the cracks of mainstream history. Others are hiding in plain sight, waiting for curious minds to uncover them.

Untold Chapters from the History of India: Book 1 by Harshali Singh invites readers to look beyond the history they already know and discover 25 intriguing stories that reveal the many surprises our past holds.

What if a king refused to bow to British power? What makes a car appear to roll uphill? Why did Bengaluru have streetlights before London? What secrets lie beneath the waters of Roopkund’s mysterious Skeleton Lake? And how did an ancient Indian game become one of the world’s most enduring pastimes?

These are just some of the questions that open the door to a remarkable journey through India’s lesser-known history.

Moving across politics, geography, science, mythology, archaeology, architecture, education, trade, sports, and everyday products, the book explores the unexpected connections between the past and the present. It brings together stories that challenge assumptions, spark questions, and reveal the extraordinary achievements of people who may not always receive the recognition they deserve.

At its heart, this is a book about looking again—and discovering that history is far more fascinating than a list of dates and events.

Stories That Bring History to Life

History becomes memorable when it is experienced through stories. Rather than simply presenting facts, Untold Chapters from the History of India opens each chapter with an imaginative narrative grounded in historical facts. These story-led introductions invite readers into a particular moment, mystery, or discovery before guiding them towards the historical information behind it.

Readers can encounter brave young revolutionaries such as Santi Ghosh and Suniti Choudhury, whose acts of resistance challenge the idea that courage belongs only to adults. They can discover figures such as Saraswathi Rajamani and Tantia Bhil, whose stories add important dimensions to our understanding of resistance, heroism, and India's struggle against oppression.

By bringing lesser-known individuals and events into focus, the book encourages readers to broaden their understanding of the people who shaped India's story.

From Ancient Marvels to Everyday Mysteries

India’s past is filled with achievements that continue to inspire wonder. The book explores fascinating architectural features such as the hanging pillar at Lepakshi and the singing pillars of Hampi, inviting readers to consider the ingenuity behind these remarkable creations.

It also journeys into the worlds of ancient education and scientific thought, including Nalanda and the history of zero. From the Dancing Girl figurine of the Indus Valley Civilisation to the origins of chess in Chaturanga, these chapters reveal how ideas, inventions, and artistic achievements can travel across centuries and influence the world far beyond their place of origin.

Even familiar aspects of everyday life have surprising histories. The story of spices and their place in trade, or the connection between the word shampoo and champo, shows how the past continues to live in our kitchens, our language, our games, and our daily routines.

The result is a collection that makes readers pause and wonder: how many extraordinary stories are hidden behind the things we take for granted?

Where Curiosity Meets Discovery

The book also explores the mysteries of India's landscape—from the Siliguri Corridor and its geographical significance to Roopkund Skeleton Lake and the curious phenomenon of cars that appear to roll uphill. Other chapters venture into mythology, nature, and cultural beliefs, examining subjects such as why myths begin in forests, the complex place of snakes in Indian traditions, and the intriguing phenomenon known as the Bermuda Triangle of birds.

These stories encourage readers to ask questions rather than accept the familiar at face value. They demonstrate that history is not a closed chapter. It is an ongoing process of investigation, interpretation, and discovery, shaped by evidence, ideas, and the questions we continue to ask.

Making Learning an Adventure

Designed to encourage active engagement, Untold Chapters from the History of India goes beyond storytelling. Each chapter includes sections titled ‘What History Says’ and ‘Why It Matters Today’, helping readers connect the stories with historical facts and contemporary relevance.

A suggested activity, ‘Try This’, offers another way to engage with the subject, while further-reading recommendations encourage readers to explore topics that capture their interest.

This combination of narrative, information, reflection, and activity makes the book particularly valuable for young readers, students, parents, and educators looking for ways to make history more engaging. It also offers adult readers an opportunity to revisit India's past through stories they may never have encountered before.

More importantly, the book encourages a habit of curiosity. It invites readers to question, investigate, make connections, and recognise that learning can begin with something as simple as an unexpected fact.

Untold Chapters from the History of India is an invitation to explore this richness with fresh eyes.
